In class we took the final test on North/South Korea. It was only a 30 question test so it did not take long and you gave us the first 15 mins of class time to study and prepare. When i first got the test i knew most then started having some troubles. I knew i had to get a good grade bc my grade in the class is not well. I prepared for this test well ahead of test day but still did not get the grade i needed. I also emailed Mr Schick after i received my test score. Also today was the last day in the same class and the new semester starts tuesday.

Class

Todays class we continued to watch the movie and we finished it.
The parts that we watched today were very interesting and i learned a lot from. They are called internment camps. People go to internment camps when they commit a crime or someone else in their family commits a crime. There is one called 22 and thats where they take family members of whoever commited a crime and work them to death usually.

Some people try and escape. Usually people escape to China. Smugglers usually help the people along and get them there. Since its so dangerous to escape many people get caught and thrown into a camp. In the movie their was a young boy who was on duty at a camp and he was the only one ever able to escape. He had to use his skills that he had learned to get out of their safely. However once you get to china their is always risk that if you do something wrong their they will turn you in back to North Korea.

At the end of the movie it shows the eye patients and they said that they reached there goal of 1000 surgeries in 10 days. Then they start taking off the bandages and people are able to see again. Since people were on camera they worshipped their leader so much. They started screaming messages to him and saying all these good things and they didn't even care about the guy that gave them the procedure to be able to see again. All the credit was given to the leader.

Class

In todays class we continued to watch the movie on North Korea.  While watching the movie they start all the surgeries on the eyes. He has to do over 100 surgeries a day in order to reach the correct number of patients.

  • In 2006 40% of the kids in North Korea were malnourished
  • They have a building where the north and south can have meetings and when they open the door they hold hands so that they can't get pulled over the border
  • One of the blind ladies says that the worst thing in her life is not being able to see her leader and started to cry.
  • Juche- means that they can take care of themselves and do not need anybody else because they think they have the greatest leader in the world and they do need anybody.
  • When the first generation of the leaders died everyone was traumatized

Class

Todays class we watched a very interesting movie about North Korea. The movie was about a doctor who headed to north korea to do around 1,000 eye surgeries in 10 days. He took a few extra people with him who snuck a camera. While they were packing they had to place the camera secretively in order for them not to see it. When they got there they continued to take secret shots of what was going on. It was very creepy. All you saw were big pictures of their leader. Everyone was so bossed around they couldn't do anything. We had to leave right as they start setting up to do all the surgeries with the equipment.

North and South Korea

Korea- North and South

About North Korea

  • oppressive government
  • very secluded and isolated from the world
  • currently headed by Kim Jong-Un
  • Kim Jong-Un didn't seem to like The interview
North Korea
Oppressive Government
  • State run socialist government that many consider to be a Stalinist dictatorship
  • official name: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)
  • notice that they say "Korea", not North Korea- they claim to be legitimate rulers of the entire peninsula
Secluded and isolated
  • isolated by the government
  • also somewhat isolated geographically
  • Pyongyang in the capital
North Korea is almost completely dark compared to neighboring South Korea and China.
